Super Mates Episode 17: The Monster Squad and Super Friends vs. Monsters!

It’s the final trip to the House of Franklin-Stein, and the Franklins have saved the best for last! Okay, maybe not the best, but certainly the most fun! Chris, Cindy and special guest-son Andrew discuss director Fred Dekker’s love letter to all things monsterific, 1987’s The Monster Squad!
Dracula, the Frankenstein Monster, the Wolfman, the Mummy, and the Creature descend upon 1987 suburbia to bring about an age of never-ending evil. The only thing standing in their way is a bunch of foul-mouthed kids! Along the way the find that Scary German Guys aren’t so scary, monsters CAN be your friends, and most importantly…Wolfman’s got nards!

Then we dig into that dusty longbox one more time, and pull out Super Friends #10. The World’s Greatest Super Heroes rush to the aid of a beautiful blonde woman, plagued by a legion of Monsters! But all isn’t what it seems, and there are lessons to be learned before the end credits roll!

  1. I somehow missed THE MONSTER SQUAD growing up. I probably thought it was a little too kiddie-looking for me (I was 16), despite the presence of monsters. So I didn't see the movie until just a few years ago. And while I appreciate the movie for its love of the Universal monsters, it's not in my bones the way it is for a lot of people around my age.

Danny's forlorn "I wish I had a treehouse..." comment made me sad.

I am completely ignoring the Aquaman bashing.

"If there's a picture of tits, a teenage boy will find them." There's a wisdom in this show.

  3. I almost cut out Cindy's words of wisdom on boys and boobies, but I just couldn't.

Yeah, the treehouse bit did sound sad. We beat him in our spare time too. :-)

Again, the Aquaman bashing had NOTHING to do with me. I did think Arthur got the shaft in the SF comic. Off-panel fight with the Creature blows.
